March is an important time for Camden County Schools as we join the nation in celebrating National Nutrition Month®. Initiated in 1973 by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, this month-long observance encourages our school community to recognize the significance of making informed food choices and developing healthy eating and physical activity habits.
This year's theme, "Food Connects Us," resonates deeply within our schools. Food serves as more than just nourishment; it acts as a vital link to our cultures, families, and friendships. Sharing meals in our school cafeterias provides a wonderful opportunity for students to engage in conversations about the preparation of their food, the individuals who made it, and the stories behind its ingredients.
Katrina Millan Flannery, the Director of School Nutrition, emphasizes this connection, stating, “Food is a bridge to understanding our diverse backgrounds and fostering community among our students.” Recognizing that access to various foods can significantly impact our dietary choices, Flannery continues, “We strive to ensure that our students have the opportunity to enjoy farm to school nutritious meals that contribute positively to their health as often as possible.”
As we celebrate National Nutrition Month, we encourage our students and families to evaluate their eating and physical activity habits. Here are some ways to get involved:
Explore New Foods and Flavors:
Try new ingredients and cooking methods to make meals exciting and nutritious.
Learn About Food Origins:
Understanding where food comes from can enhance appreciation and connection to it.
Balance Your Plate:
Strive to include a variety of food groups in every meal for a well-rounded diet.
Stay Active:
Make physical activity a part of your daily routine to complement nutrition efforts.
As we embrace National Nutrition Month, let’s take the time to reflect on how food connects us all within the Camden County Schools community. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn, share, and enjoy the diverse world of nutrition and health together.
