Mary Lee Clark Elementary School is now home to a vibrant new mural that not only brightens the campus walls but also carries a powerful message for future generations. The artwork, a stunning depiction of a marlin accompanied by the words "You can make waves of change," was designed and painted by Maikayla Huynh, a senior at Camden County High School and a proud former student of MLCES.
Maikayla, who is set to attend the University of Georgia to study Business Administration and Environmental Science, was recently selected to serve on Georgia Superintendent Richard Woods’ 2024–2025 Student Advisory Council. As part of her responsibilities, she was tasked with developing and carrying out a community service project—and she chose one close to both her heart and her roots.
“As an artist and passionate advocate, I chose to do a beautification project that could make an impact on others and inspire change,” she said. “This mural was especially special to me because I went to MLCES as a kid, and I’ll be going back soon for my senior walk.”
The mural’s message was deeply personal to Maikayla, reflecting lessons she learned throughout her academic journey in Camden County.
“In the later years of my school career, I overcame my doubts and mistakes, learning that I had the ability to be a leader and make positive change through dedication and hard work,” she shared. “That’s something I just wanted young, emerging leaders to know at the start of their journey, rather than having to overcome their self-doubt like I did.”
The quote she selected—“You can make waves of change”—is a testament to that growth and serves as a daily encouragement to every student who passes by her artwork.
What makes this mural even more meaningful is the connection it has to Maikayla’s family. Her younger sister is currently a fifth grader at MLCES, preparing to graduate this year.
“As an older sister, I want her to know that she can do anything she puts her mind to,” Maikayla said. “This project made me feel like I could really leave my mark on a place that shaped the person I am today. And I believe that if it helps at least one person in their journey, the 30 hours of work would have been more than worth it.”
Through her creativity, commitment, and message of empowerment, Maikayla Huynh has not only beautified her former elementary school, but has also left a legacy of hope and inspiration that will continue to ripple through the halls of Mary Lee Clark for years to come.
